Belize immigration & customs declaration

Belize Declaration: Requirements

A working checklist for the Belize online immigration and customs declaration, plus what an officer may ask for at the desk that the form never mentions.

13 min read

The Belize Travel Declaration takes about ten minutes if your details are in front of you and half an evening if they are not. This guide lists exactly what to collect before you start, and separates it clearly from what a border officer may ask to see on arrival — two different lists that travellers often confuse.

The short version: you need a valid passport for every traveller, your flight numbers or land border post, a confirmed first-night address, a working email address, the purpose and length of your stay, and a short mental inventory of your luggage for the customs section. Separately, an officer may ask for an onward ticket and evidence of funds.

Everything the declaration asks for fits on one desk. Collect it once and the form is quick.

The one form that covers immigration and customs

The most useful thing to understand about this declaration is that it does two jobs. It carries the immigration data that used to go on the paper embarkation and disembarkation card, and it carries the customs data that used to go on a separate card handed out on the aircraft.

That is why the list of things to have ready is longer than for a typical arrival form. You are answering questions about who you are and why you are coming, and also about what you are bringing with you.

When you submit, the system produces a QR code. That code is what immigration and customs officers scan on arrival. It is the output of the process, not a permission to enter — the decision is still made at the desk.

In brief: one form, two purposes, so gather identity data and luggage data together.

Your passport and its validity

Every traveller needs their own valid passport, including infants. Enter the details exactly as they appear on the data page: full name in the order printed there, passport number, issuing country, dates of issue and expiry.

On validity, Belize is generally described as requiring a passport valid for the duration of your stay, but the prudent standard — and the one many airlines apply at check-in — is six months of remaining validity. If your passport expires within six months of your trip, renew it or accept a real risk of trouble before you even board.

Two details worth double-checking:

  • Names with two surnames, hyphens or accents should be typed as the passport prints them, not as you normally write them.
  • A recently renewed passport means a new number. Make sure the number on the declaration is the one in the document you will actually carry.

In brief: enter the passport exactly as printed, and aim for six months of validity.

Travel details: flight or border post

The declaration needs to know how and when you are entering. For air arrivals that means the airline, flight number and arrival date into Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (PGIA / BZE). Take these from your ticket, not from memory — codeshares mean the number on your booking confirmation may differ from the one on the airport screens.

For land arrivals you identify the port of entry instead: Santa Elena coming from Chetumal in Mexico, or Benque Viejo del Carmen coming from Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala. Sea arrivals cover cruise calls at Belize City and water taxis from Guatemala and Mexico.

Because the form only opens in the three days before you arrive, these details are usually settled by the time you file. If they are not, read our guide to the 72-hour window before you start.

In brief: use the flight number printed on your ticket, or name the exact land border post.

Accommodation: the address for your first night

You are asked where you will be staying. The practical answer is the address of your first night's accommodation, with enough detail to be identifiable — property name, street or area, and town or caye.

For a hotel in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, the property name and the caye is usually sufficient. For a rental, use the address the host gave you rather than the platform listing title. If you are staying with friends or family, use their residential address.

Good to know: a vague answer such as "touring the country" is the fastest way to turn a thirty-second conversation at the desk into a five-minute one. Give a real address for night one, even if the rest of the trip is open.

In brief: name a real, findable address for your first night.

Contact details and the confirmation email

The email address you enter is where your confirmation and QR code arrive, so it must be one you can open on your phone during the trip. Two frequent problems:

  1. A typo in the address means the confirmation goes nowhere. Read it back before submitting.
  2. A work address behind a corporate VPN may be unreachable from a hotel network abroad.

Use a personal address, check the spam folder if nothing arrives within a few minutes, and download the QR code to your device rather than relying on the email itself. Our QR code guide covers storage and printing.

In brief: use a personal email you can open offline, and save the QR locally.

Purpose and length of stay

Two short questions that deserve accurate answers. Purpose is usually tourism, but business, visiting family, transit and study are all realistic options — pick the one that genuinely describes your trip.

Length of stay matters because most visitors from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the EU enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Give the number of days you actually plan to stay, matched to your onward ticket. Saying "30 days" out of caution while holding a ticket out on day nine simply invites questions.

If your plans exceed a month, look at our guide to entry requirements and visa-free travel before you file.

In brief: answer honestly and keep the stated stay consistent with your ticket.

The customs section and the full checklist

This is the part travellers underestimate. You are asked what you are bringing into the country: goods above the personal allowance, currency above the reportable threshold, commercial samples, and restricted categories such as food of animal origin, plants, seeds, medicines in quantity, drones or firearms.

The rule of thumb is simple. If you are wondering whether something should be declared, declare it. Declaring costs you a question at the desk; not declaring can cost you the item and a conversation you would rather not have.

For the detail on allowances and prohibited items, see Belize customs: what you can bring.

Here is everything from this guide in one place:

What Where it comes from Needed for Watch out for
Passport data page The document itself Every traveller, including infants Name exactly as printed; six months' validity is prudent
Flight number and date Your ticket or booking email Air arrivals Codeshares: use the number on the ticket
Land border post Your route Arrivals from Mexico or Guatemala Santa Elena or Benque Viejo del Carmen
First-night address Hotel or rental confirmation All travellers The host's real address, not the listing title
Email address Personal account Receiving the QR code Typos; corporate mail behind a VPN
Purpose and length of stay Your plans All travellers Must match your onward ticket
Customs information Your luggage All travellers Declare if unsure
Onward ticket Airline or bus booking The officer, not the form Should fall inside your permitted stay
Evidence of funds Card, cash, statement The officer, not the form Commonly cited around 75 USD per day

Amounts and thresholds move. Treat the last two rows as orders of magnitude and confirm current requirements on the official portal before you travel.

In brief: when in doubt, declare — and note that the last two rows are the ones the form never mentions and the officer might.

Type the passport exactly as printed — most rejected data comes from name mismatches.

What the form asks versus what the officer asks

These are two separate checkpoints, and passing the first does not exempt you from the second.

The form collects identity, itinerary, accommodation, purpose, duration and customs data. It produces a QR code. It does not decide anything.

The officer at the desk may additionally want to see an onward ticket dated inside your permitted stay, and to be satisfied that you have sufficient funds for the visit — a figure often quoted at around 75 USD per day, which should be read as guidance rather than a fixed official amount. A card and a plausible answer normally settle it.

Both checkpoints matter. A perfect declaration with no onward ticket still makes for a slow arrival. Have the return or onward booking on your phone alongside the QR code. If you would rather we reviewed the whole file first, start your declaration here.

In brief: the form is data; the officer makes the decision. Prepare for both.

Special cases: minors, groups, business and residents

  • Minors. Every child needs a passport and must appear in the declaration. A child travelling with one parent or with a third party may be asked for consent documentation from the non-travelling parent, so carry it.
  • Groups and families. Families are commonly handled in a single submission with one responsible adult, but every member must be listed. Unrelated groups should file individually.
  • Business trips. Choose business as the purpose and be ready to name the company you are visiting. If you are carrying samples, demonstration equipment or tools, that belongs in the customs section.
  • Residents and returning nationals. Belizean nationals and residents also complete the declaration, with the status and documents that correspond to them rather than the tourist route.

Good to know: we are an independent paid assistance service, not Belize Immigration. You may always file directly on the official portal at no service cost. What we provide is review, preparation and support in Spanish and English.

In brief: the form covers everyone, but the supporting documents vary by traveller type.

If your accommodation is not booked yet

This is the single most common blocker, and it is easier to solve than people fear.

The declaration only opens 72 hours before arrival, so by then you should at least have night one settled. If you are travelling open-ended, the practical approach is:

  1. Book one refundable night at your arrival point — Belize City, San Pedro or San Ignacio.
  2. Use that address in the declaration.
  3. Change your plans freely afterwards. Nobody expects a fixed itinerary for a 30-day stay.

What you should not do is invent an address or leave the field vague. A booking that exists and is later changed is normal travel; an address that does not exist is a problem.

If you are crossing overland, the same logic applies to your first night on the Belizean side — see land borders and exit fees for what else to expect at those posts.

In brief: book one refundable night, declare it, and change plans afterwards.

Key points

  • Every traveller needs their own passport; six months of remaining validity is the prudent standard.
  • Flight numbers come from the ticket, and land arrivals name the exact border post.
  • A real, findable address for the first night is required — vagueness costs time at the desk.
  • The customs section is part of the same form; declare anything you are unsure about.
  • Onward ticket and evidence of funds are officer requirements, not form fields.
  • Without a booking, one refundable night solves the problem cleanly.

FAQ about requirements and documents

How much passport validity do I need for Belize?

Belize is generally described as requiring validity for the duration of your stay, but six months is the prudent standard and the one airlines tend to enforce. Renew if you are close to the line.

Do children need their own declaration entry?

Yes. Every traveller, including infants, needs a passport and must appear in the declaration. Families are often handled in one submission with a responsible adult listed first.

What if I have not booked a hotel yet?

Book one refundable night at your arrival point and use that address. You can change the rest of the trip afterwards. Do not invent an address or leave the field vague.

Do I have to show an onward ticket?

The officer may ask for one dated inside your permitted stay, even though it is not a field on the form. Have the booking available on your phone with your QR code.

How much money should I be able to show?

A figure of around 75 USD per day is commonly cited. Treat that as guidance rather than an official fixed amount, and confirm current expectations before you travel.

Which flight number do I use on a codeshare?

The one printed on your own ticket or booking confirmation. That is the reference the system and the officer will match against your documents.

Is the customs part optional if I have nothing to declare?

No. The customs section is part of the same form and must be completed. If you are carrying nothing above the allowances, you answer accordingly — but you still answer.

I am travelling for work. Does that change anything?

Select business as the purpose, know the company you are visiting, and declare any samples, tools or demonstration equipment in the customs section.

Can I use my work email address?

You can, but a personal address is safer. Corporate mail behind a VPN is often unreachable from hotel networks, and you need to open the confirmation while travelling.

Where do I confirm the current requirements?

On the official Belize Immigration portal at belizetravel.immigration.gov.bz. Requirements and amounts change, so verify there rather than relying on any secondary source, including this page.
